Slovakia could lose seat in European Parliament: MEP

Slovakia could lose one of its 14 Members of the European Parliament following voting on a draft amendment to the treaty establishing the European Parliament scheduled for Oct 11, Christian Democrat (KDH) MEP Anna Z?borsk? said on October 9. The European Parliament has 785 members, and the draft is proposing a cut to 750.
The reduction is set to be made in line with the principle of "degressive proportionality", according to which smaller states hold more seats in the EP than they would be entitled to if the system were based purely on population size. Under the amendment, the larger European countries stand to lose more MEPs than the smaller states, while the very smallest - Malta, Luxembourg, Cyprus and Estonia - will retain the guaranteed minimum number of six.
Despite this, according to Z?borsk?, Slovakia could still lose an MEP. She added that according to her proposal, the two smaller-population states of Slovakia and Finland should retain their current number of MEPs.
