Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel opened a renovated building that will host the Slovenian Embassy and the ambassador's residence. The three-floor building in Washington's diplomatic quarters was constructed in the 1960s and used to host the Yugoslav embassy.
Slovenia has been allotted it under a succession agreement between former Yugoslav countries. The ambassador's residence, which will occupy the top floor, features a salon, dining room and terrace with separate family quarters, while the lower two floors include embassy offices, a reception hall and two guest apartments. The opening ceremony of the new embassy at 2410 California Street also featured an exhibition of two Slovenian artists who live and work in New York, Tobias Putrih and Emil Memon.
The Slovenian Foreign Ministry contracted the renovation works to Powe Jones Architects in September last year, with part of the funds coming from the sale of the old embassy and residence. Slovenia's ambassador to the United States Samuel Zbogar has been drawing attention in the past year with his marathons to raise money for the Slovenian-run International Trust Fund for Demining (ITF).
