Cotonou, Benin - The Benin Government has withdrawn the operating licence of the mobile telephone network operator "Telecel Benin Sa" following the failure of the company to comply with the terms of its contract.
Benin's extraordinary Council of Ministers said at the end of its meeting here Monday the licence had now been awarded to "Etisalat", which is the major shareholder of "Atlantique Telecom". Atlantique Telecom is a major shareholder in Telecel Benin but there has been a fundamental disagreement between the three companies.
A statement issued after the Ministers' meeting said the decision to withdraw the licence and award it to another company was to ensure continuity in service. Telecel Benin has reportedly failed to comply with all the contractual agreements which include the payment of 15 billion cfa for a new licence because of the disagreement between the shareholders.
