The annual budget for 2008 will be presented to the National Assembly in early November 2007, the Finance Minister Ms Clotilde Nizigama said. The Finance ministry is still awaiting the results of talks with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund which are due to start in late October 2007.

The government of Burundi now depends largely on tax revenues and duties to pay civil servants after donors refused to disburse promised funds to the government of Burundi because of its poor performance in governance, fighting corruption and economic embezzlement as well as the lack of improvement in the political and security situation throughout the country.

The readjustment of the budget for the second semester was not addressed by the national assembly during its previous session since the government did not plan to undertake other expenses. The implementation of the promised 34&percnt increase in salary for civil servants will depend on the results of these talks with the IMF.
