Bujumbura - Burundi's president started consultations with a key opposition party in a bid to break a political deadlock that has crippled the small central African nation for months, sources on both sides said Wednesday.

"President (Pierre) Nkurunziza saw us on Tuesday for an hour... We are pleased at this resumption of consultations aimed at forming a national unity government in Burundi," Uprona chairman Aloys Rubuka told AFP. The presidency confirmed that the talks - which are scheduled to continue on Thursday - had resumed.

Uprona is Burundi's second largest opposition party and the main one representing the Tutsi community. Last week, Uprona lawmakers demonstrated in front of the interior ministry to protest against a police raid on one of their meetings and demanded that the president's party resume unity talks.
