Papal guidance for bishops of Gabon

Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) met on October 26 with a group of bishops from Gabon, who were completing their ad limina visits to Rome.

The Holy Father encouraged the African prelates to be vigilant so that the faithful will not "let themselves be attracted by the consumerist permissive society, paying less attention to the poorest people of their country." He cautioned, too, about "a certain relaxation" in moral standards, urging the bishops to counteract that trend by setting standards for "ever more exemplary" Christian conduct.

Following the pattern that he has set in meetings with bishops from many different countries, the Pope placed special stress on the need for bishops to take care of the education and spiritual formation of their priests, and maintain a strong personal bond with their clergy. "They will find spiritual support in the brotherhood of priests, comforted by you who are father and brother to them," he said.
