FORMER Information and Broadcasting Services minister, Vernon Mwaanga has predicted a bright future for Zambia and advised leaders to look beyond themselves and their tribes. Announcing his retirement from active politics in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Mwaanga said people, especially leaders should always focus on the bigger picture of the whole country instead of restricting themselves to tribes.
Mr Mwaanga, who was flanked by his childhood companion, Alexander Chikwanda and friend, Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika, said he had to pay a price for his nationalistic approach. He said when he opted to join UNIP instead of the then African National Congress (ANC), which was mainly backed by his tribesmen, he was misconstrued as traitor and his relatives could not talk to him for four years. He said by joining UNIP, he was looking at the bigger picture of the entire Zambia instead of the tribe or region. He said the country had a bright economic future if current policies would be effectively implemented.
Mr Mwaanga said he had decided to retire from active politics because he thought he had done his best as a person. He told journalists and some members of the public, notably some opposition members of Parliament, that he diligently served Zambia during his tour of duty in various capacities and places. He said although he was retiring from active politics, he would remain a proud member of the MMD, the party he helped to found and he would be available to give advice to whoever would desire it.
