News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch joined heads of state from Turkey, Croatia and Timor-L'Este in condemning violence in Myanmar and called on economic prosperity as a cure for the global turmoil. Stepping into world politics at the Clinton Global Initiative at the Sheraton Hotel on Friday, Murdoch called attention to the political strife with Buddhist Monks and others getting cut down in protest of the military junta running the country. This past week in Myanmar, nine people were killed on Sept. 27 and four people, including three monks were killed on Sept. 26, according to recent press reports.
Murdoch complained that human rights are being "steamrolled" in Myanmar, and held out hope that economic prosperity could help cure some of the world's political strife "The best chance to fight this is to have a full stomach," Murdoch said. Asked whether his media outlets have helped polarize opinion in the U.S. and elsewhere, Murdoch said his publications do "enter the public debate" at times, but that it's all part of the overall "education of an advanced society."
Murdoch was joined at a panel, "Realizing Rights: The Ethnical Globalization Initiative," moderated by Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, and also featuring Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister of Turkey, Jose Ramos Horta, president of Timor-L'Este and Stjepan Mesic, president of Croatia. Murdoch drew praise from former president Bill Clinton for News Corp.'s role in combating global warming through its participation in the Client Change Initiative and other measures.
