New Delhi, Oct 19: Mahesh Yadav, a peace activist and convener of Mahatma Gandhi Tibet Freedom Movement, arrested by the police last week for allegedly storming into the Chinese embassy, has been granted bail by a city court. Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Bansal released Yadav on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 10,000 with a surety of the like amount yesterday.
Yadav was detained along with 21 other Tibetan activists, who had on October 10 tried to enter the Chinese embassy here demanding immediate withdrawal of the recent Chinese order that all of Tibet's spiritual leaders or lamas must obtain approval from its government. Before many of the protesters were subdued and taken away by the police, the activists had reportedly sprayed "free Tibet" on the embassy walls and the main gate.
According to the protestors, China's recent order was aimed at undermining the influence of their supreme spiritual leader dalai lama and other influential Tibetan lamas, who are now mostly based outside their native place allegedly due to China's religious and political suppression policies. Yadav, who has been spearheading a movement for Tibet's freedom for over a decade now, has earlier also been detained by police on the similar charges of rioting and unlawful assembly when Tibetan protestors had stormed into the embassy in April this year.
