West Jordan is making room for a 100-year-old barn at its expansive Veterans Memorial Park. The City Council this week decided to grant additional space - about 7,000 square feet - to the West Jordan Historical Museum's current lease at the park near 7800 South and 2000 West. The museum plans to save the historic Steadman barn from demolition by moving it to its site on Sept. 30. The current owner of the barn, a real estate developer, has donated it to the museum, but it must be moved to make way for a new subdivision. The museum has raised more than $27,000 to cover the cost of moving the barn.

City Attorney Roger Cutler ruled that leasing additional space to the museum would not violate a city ordinance, spawned by a grass-roots initiative, that protects the park from development. He deemed the museum an allowable "cultural service." The nonprofit group still has to sign the new lease, but board chairwoman Linda Dalley said she is pleased with the changes. "It's wonderful," Dalley said Wednesday. "We were quite surprised [when Mayor David Newton and City Manager Gary Luebbers suggested the change] because it never entered our minds to ask for more property." The museum could have squeezed the 26-foot-tall barn into its existing space, but the extra room allows for a greater setback from the other museum buildings and leaves room for visitor parking.

In other action this week, the City Council revised its lease with the Archibald Gardner Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers for the historic Pioneer Hall. The camp has a 99-year lease for the building that expires May 31, 2036. But the city, which owns the property, proposed amending the contract after it completed an expensive renovation of the 140-year-old rock structure, one of the earliest LDS meetinghouses built west of the Jordan River.
