The government has given its assurance to the Antigua and Barbuda Pensioners Association (ABPA) that the list of common ailments covered by the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) will be expanded. Minister of Labour and Empowerment Dr. Jacqui Quinn Leandro made this disclosure during the presentation of a $50,000 subvention to the ABPA on Tuesday.
President of the association Charles ‘Eddie’ Hunte has been lobbying for such an initiative for several years. “This government is prepared to expand the list of ailments that are covered by medical benefits,” Dr. Quinn-Leandro said.
The list of ailments covered by the scheme will include ear, nose and throat diseases, Alzheimer’s, Arthritis and Acid Reflux. “We have decided to allow the Medical Benefits Scheme to assess expanding the list of ailments to include these illnesses,” the minister stated. “This is a government that listens, this is a government that is responsive to the needs and cries of its people and we do believe that our senior citizens should be treated with respect, concern and appreciation.”
