Energy Minister Clive Mullings has ordered a probe into an islandwide power failure which plunged the country into darkness for several hours on Wednesday night. Energy Minister Clive Mullings also summoned Jamaica Public Service (JPS) executives to a meeting Thursday to explain the outage which company officials said was caused as a result of a major failure on a transmission line.

The blackout is the third island wide outage to hit the country in just under two years, with the first occurring in June 2006 and the other in July 2007. Following the power failure in 2006 then Minister of Energy Phillip Paulwell brought in a team of Canadian consultants to conduct an investigation. The consultants submitted a report which recommended a wide range of improvements to the JPS supply system.

Opposition spokesman on Energy, Michael Peart, said he wanted to know if the power company had implemented the corrective measures which were recommended following the 2006 outage. "Well this call for some clarification as to what steps the JPS has taken to resolve the failures in their system sometime ago when there was a total blackout ... recommendations were made to correct the fault.
