St. Lucia officials protest visit of Taiwanese president

The island's main opposition leader said Friday that his party would boycott a visit by Taiwan's president, reviving a controversy over St. Lucia's flip-flopping alliances with rivals Taiwan and China.

Kenny Anthony, leader of the St. Lucia Labor Party, accused Taiwan of interfering in local government affairs and favoring the ruling United Workers Party by giving certain parliament members money to fund projects in their constituencies.

St. Lucia maintained diplomatic relations with Taiwan for 13 years, but recognized China in 1997 when former Prime Minister John Compton lost the national elections. When his United Workers Party returned to power in December 2006, it began favoring Taiwan even though China which had already financed a stadium and psychiatric hospital on the poor Caribbean island pledged more money and technical assistance.
