PARAMARIBO, Suriname: Government officials here have announced that Suriname will do all it can to help neighboring Guyana to address the crime situation in that country. Justice Minister Chandrikapersad Santokhi told reporters Wednesday morning that, since the gruesome murders in Lusignan last weekend, police in Guyana are in close contacts with their counterparts here in an attempt to capture the perpetrators if they might flee to Suriname.
Meanwhile, Suriname has beefed up police stations in Nickerie at the border with Guyana, while police and army have increased patrols on the Corentyne River and Nickerie River. Just before the weekly cabinet meeting the authorities here were monitoring developments in Guyana very closely and are ready to assist this fellow CARICOM member state in any way possible. “On the operational level we are exchanging information and intelligence especially about individuals who are being named suspect in this case”, said Santokhi, adding that authorities want to ensure that “no suspect is heading our way”.
He further noted that if in any case these individuals enter Suriname, police and other security forces are ready to deal with them. If they might be caught here, these individuals would be expelled as soon as possible to stand trial in Guyana.
