Natwarlal Vagh is the longest serving member of not only the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce but the Fiji Chamber Commerce as well. Mr Vagh has been a member for more than three decades, during which he has held the top position of both chambers. While being a leader of the chamber in his hometown, on three occasions in the 1980s, he was leader of the Fiji Chamber of Commerce. "It was in the early 80s, mid 80s and the late 80s," he said.
Mr Vagh said about six years ago, former interim Commerce Minister Taito Waradi approached him to lead the Fiji chamber. "So I nominated his name and he became the first Fijian to be president of the chamber." Mr Vagh's involvement in both chambers has enabled him to get to know most business owners. Various governments have also asked him for advice on trade-related matters.
However, while he has been happy to help governments, he is wary of politics. Mr Vagh said politics was not his game but he was happy to give advice and suggestions to politicians. He is proud to have worked with all of Fiji's prime ministers including the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Sitiveni Rabuka, Mahendra Chaudhry and Laisenia Qarase. He had also given some of the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce's views to interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
