Palau’s Senate is due to go into recess this Friday, but must consider two bills before then that President Tommy Remengesau Jr. has called “urgent.”

The President says the bill to establish the Environmental Protected Area Network had to be made law so Palau qualifies for $6 million in Global Environment Facility funding. The bill has been with Senator Santy Asanuma’s Resources, Commerce, Trade and Development Committee for a decision on whether the national government or state governments should receive the proceeds of visitor fees for such protected sites.

Floor Leader and Committee on Ways, Means and Financial Matters Chairman Alan Seid has also promised to have the Financial Investment Act amendments passed before the Senate adjourns. Though there are two versions, House and Senate, the floor leader says,“I want this bill to be passed this week and don’t want to fight over which version will be adopted.”
