Bank keeps doors open

While the wrath of Cyclone Gene shut down financial services and banks across Fiji on Tuesday, four branches of the Colonial National Bank opened for business, offering limited services. Only Colonial National Bank branches in Lautoka, Savusavu, Levuka and Suva Central Branch stayed open until 3pm as other banks remained closed for the day.

A leader who is wary of politics

Natwarlal Vagh is the longest serving member of not only the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce but the Fiji Chamber Commerce as well. Mr Vagh has been a member for more than three decades, during which he has held the top position of both chambers.

Desperate for democracy

The search for true democracy in Fiji has been long and arduous. Many have lamented the violent death of the 1970 Constitution at the hands of Rabuka's hitmen. There have been unending discussions of "if only" that constitution had been allowed to deliver. Fiji was indeed at Rostov's "take-off" stage in 1987.

Parties attempt to derail charter

THE Citizens Constitutional Forum has accused two political parties of attempting to derail the proposed People's Charter for Change, Peace and Progress. CCF executive director Reverend Akuila Yabaki condemned statements by the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party and the National Federation Party which stated that the charter was an initiative of the interim Finance Minister.
