The government of New Caledonia has appealed for calm after one young man was killed as a result of another episode of an ongoing land-related feud between rival clans reports Oceania Flash. Last Thursday an 18-year-old young man was found dead in the tribe of Houa?lou (Eastern coast of the main island, also know as the "Grande Terre"). "According to preliminary findings of the investigation, it appears this murder could be linked to the conflict between the Euribeari and Poukiou tribes, which has already caused several severe injuries and many exactions over the past few years", New Caledonia's government said in a release.

"But for the first time, the irreparable has been committed. These actions are inadmissible. Whatever the dispute may be, justice can only be rendered by the judicial authorities, the release goes on. The local executive also strongly condemns the young man's murder and has appealed for calm, asking both clans to restore dialogue in order to find a solution to a conflict that "has already lasted too long".

The government also suggested that some kind of conciliatory approach should be taken by political and chiefly authorities in order to reach "lasting peace" in the region. Since the latest incident, apart from criminal and forensic investigators, police in New Caledonia have also been deployed in force into the region, under the supervision of New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna's gendarmes (the military wind of the French law enforcement arsenal) commander, Colonel Laumont, local media report.
